Kelly Kozma
"Treasure Box"

The catalyst for this new body of work was a jar of leftover magazine cutouts from a collage I made in 2010. Reusing leftover materials as well repurposing items that might end up thrown away, has become a very important part of my process the past decade. Stumbling across this jar of coin sized images that had waited patiently on a shelf for 12 years, ignited my creative process and drove me to explore collage in a new way.

Unlike the piece from 2010 in which I assembled the images by piecing them together, I decided to examine each individual cut out on its on. By removing the image from any other context it allows you to focus solely on its meaning, purpose or feelings that it may evoke. Each image is embedded in a field of French knots which felt like a way of creating a time capsule of sorts for the object.

Another inspiration behind this collection is my six year old son and his endless piles of sticks, stones, leaves, etc in our home. Only to him they aren’t sticks and stones, they are treasures. His ability to find a tiny twig or scrap of paper and not only cherish it but give it a backstory of why it is so special, is a beautiful thing and one I have tried to tap into with my new work. By placing a picture of a rubberband ball or a set of Dracula teeth or a banana in this embroidered box it allows one to analyze it more in depth. There are so many objects we take for granted on a daily basis so I wanted to make the viewer slow down and make their own personal connections with the imagery I used. I am grateful to my younger self for knowing to hang onto that jar and to my young son for inspiring me with his incredible imagination.

Caitlin McCormack

Through humor and satire, these meticulously crafted fiber sculptures are both superficial and intimate studies of the sublime. A secret, insatiable hunger for the grotesque is present in each cassette’s devoutly hand-wrought construction. Reappropriating the vernacular of horror fandom and pornography, this series explores relationships between externalized and internalized violence as seen through the eyes of a film lover and collector. Each sculpture intimates a language revealing hidden traumas, boundaries crossed, and carnal fixations, and how these notions penetrate the eternal loop of nostalgia.

Suzanna Scott

Suzanna Scott is an artist whose work explores feminist themes and visual ideas in and of the body. Her viral Coin Cunt series of inverted change purses, stitched to resemble vulvae, portrays endless cultural associations between women, money and power. At the same time this collection serves as a timely symbol of empowerment and equality for all women.

Entering her third decade as an artist, Scott employs a range of materials, including stone, wax, fiber, paper, resin and the occasional found object. Her work has been widely exhibited in the United States and can be found in private collections worldwide. Scott currently lives and works in Ruston, Louisiana.

As a paper engineer, Matthew Shlian’s work is rooted in print media, book arts and commercial design. Beginning with an initial fold, a single action causes a transfer of energy to subsequent folds, which ultimately manifest in drawing and three dimensional forms. He uses many engineering skills to create kinetic sculptures, some of which have led to collaborations with scientists at the University of Michigan. Guided by wonder, his work is made because he cannot visualize its final realization; in this way he comes to understanding through curiosity.
