Lauren Rinaldi: Second Shift
Posted on August 28 2022
Paradigm Gallery is pleased to present Second Shift, a solo exhibition of new work by Philadelphia artist Lauren Rinaldi. Self-constructed “Fashion Plates” inspired by the popular Takara Tomy brand 80s/90s-era toy serve as the basis for Rinaldi’s updated compositions of everyday women. Societal expectations, impossible aspirations, and the never-ending laundry heap of women’s labor in the home and workplace come together in Second Shift. Rinaldi modifies the idealistic scenes of her childhood fashion plates to reflect the complex reality behind the archetype of “having it all.” Interchangeable, handmade stencils of heads, torsos, and legs offer 261 possible combinations for a range of diverse composites that only begin to approximate the wide breadth of women’s experiences. Visitors to the gallery will be invited to make their own designs using Rinaldi’s fashion plates as a framework to construct their unique visions. Second Shift will open on Friday, September 23, with an opening reception from 5:30-8:00 PM, and will be on view through Sunday, October 23.
