Space 1026: Almost There
June 02 - July 02, 2023

ARTWORK IS NOW LIVE HERE

Paradigm Gallery is pleased to present Almost There, a collaborative exhibition featuring the work of current members and alumni of the artist collective, Space 1026. Curated by the members of Space 1026, Almost There features the work of 23 artists, all working with different materials and levels of collaboration. Almost There invites current members and alumni of Space 1026 to show work collaboratively. The title is a nod to the continuously evolving–but never perfected!–nature of one of Philadelphia’s oldest artist collectives. The artists of Space 1026 have shown work individually and collaboratively for over 25 years. The work included in the exhibition spans across mediums, featuring painting, video work, drawing, carpentry, fibers, craft, mixed media, and everything in between.

A History of Collaboration in Philadelphia | Ten years ago, a group of like-minded, independent art groups active in Philadelphia—including Paradigm Gallery + Studio and Space 1026—came together for the CITYWIDE project. Through CITYWIDE, these groups unified Philadelphia's artist-run collectives in a multi-gallery month-long exhibit. Throughout November 2013, more than twenty collectives participated in an exchange of exhibitions, ideas, and practices. The multi-venue exhibit was located in different neighborhoods throughout the city.

These partnerships and the spirit of this amazing program and experience are continuing to this day, and this month is another one of our contributions to its history. Join us in celebrating this continued practice of sharing spaces and supporting each other!

About Space 1026
Founded in 1997 at 1026 Arch Street in Philadelphia's Chinatown, Space 1026 is headquarters for a network of artists who want to do it their own way, together. Their new home at 844 North Broad Street hosts a gallery for exhibitions and performances, member studios, print facilities, a woodshop, and a garden.

Space 1026 is constantly evolving. Member artists are united in their shared enthusiasm for creating art and taking giant leaps of faith. With 20 current members and a long list of alumni, the collective is defined by its member artists. And their friends. And the people who visit the gallery exhibitions. And the people who remember to buy more hand soap for the bathrooms. And the people who come to the events, workshops, and music shows.

Artist members of Space 1026 exhibit their art individually and work collaboratively to create installations. Most recently Space 1026 has shown at Vox Populi Gallery; exhibited twice at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; and the DUMBO Arts Center, Brooklyn. In 2010 they created an installation at The Print Center in Philadelphia.
