“The most striking thing for me about Old Orchard Beach was the proximity of the overtly natural landscape to the overtly artificial vibe of an old amusement town. And, perhaps ironically, I was pleasantly surprised to see how populated with tourists Old Orchard Beach was, at the time I was there. The whole place and its vibe a bit of a throwback so I assumed likely waning in popularity so to see it so thriving was reassuring in a way. Old Orchard Beach being strictly seasonal immunizes it from corporate infiltration and because of that it's a place that relies on very analog methods of attracting and entertaining people- lots of visually rich hand painted signage, small scale motels with their own novelty schtick, mimetic architecture. It was a pleasure to dive into that. In retrospect it was like being in a fugue state, being dropped into an unknown place for a protracted period of time to observe it all like a lucid dream.”
